The Lighthouse now standing in rarified air!!! Hard to imagine how 4 feet can make her so proud and noble!!
A happy crew and job well done at 4:00 pm Thursday, June 22, 2017. THIS JUST IN! SPHLS volunteers will be selling raffle tickets at the Morell COOP on Sunday, June 25th from 1-5 pm. We hope to see you there! We are almost finished the last stage of cleaning the building with a high water pressure blast.
Three passes are made at the wall including one with an anti-mildew mixture. With the final pass, the original brown of the shingle returns. You can see a 2100 gallon water truck at the parking area with its hose carefully placed along the path to the building. Next week, stay tuned for raising the lighthouse! ![]() In mid May, restoration of the lighthouse began with removal of the rusted handrail at the beacon platform. A new railing is now in fabrication. Here, a specialized crew removes lead paint left from the last paint job by the Coast Guard in 2000. As projected, the original wood shingles from the late 1880s remain in great shape! At the bottom of the left side of the lighthouse, you can just make out the excavation of sand which had covered shingles there for many years. In later June, the lighthouse will be raised four feet on a new wharf crib, so that drifting sand will no longer be a risk to the shingle wall. And of course, work is proceeding with the protection of the beautiful environmental dunes. All materials are being hand carried up the access path from the parking lot. Stay tuned for regular updates! Raffle to help preserve the St. Peters Harbour Lighthouse!
