Just 10 days left before the St. Peters Lighthouse Society Annual General Meeting!
it has indeed been an exciting summer for the SPH Lighthouse Society! The restoration work has transformed the lighthouse and just a few details remain to be completed. We could not have achieved this success without the support of the community and we will share details of this work at the upcoming Annual General Meeting to be held on on Thursday, Aug. 31st at 7:00 p.m. at the Leo Rossiter Park Chalet in Morell. Please join us!
We will also be drawing the winning tickets from our SPHLS Raffle effort so it promises to be an exciting event! Raffle tickets can still be purchased by contacting Katie Sheahan at 902-961-8920 or by writing to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will also have a booth at the Morell Farmers Market on Sunday, Aug. 27th from 9 - 1.
Stay tuned in the days and weeks ahead for photos of the lighthouse that many have begun to share with us! Here is a peek at just one that was spotted on display at the Panmure Island Lighthouse and that was taken in the early 70s! Our thanks to Vera Teschow for sending this our way.
It is hard not to do a double take now that our lighthouse painting has been completed - the response has been overwhelmingly positive. In particular - so many kudos for the colour of our trim red. (For the curious, a Benjamin Moore brand named Safety Red, a factory tinted paint resistant to fade....an easy choice.)
Our painter, Billy Connolly, did a great job completing the work over ten days including the Canada Day Holiday. (We think he took Sunday morning off for church.) The project was essentially ready for full appreciation on July 14th, two and a half weeks ahead of schedule. And, if you look carefully at the photo of Billy below, you may spot a tall ship just over his left shoulder!
So now we are onto final embellishments including a "wharf wall" trim over the crib, mounting of the Founding Members Plaque, and evening illumination of the beacon. We hope to complete all work by the end of August.
Between now and then, our team of SPHLS volunteers are hard at work selling raffle tickets to raise funds that will allow us to preserve the lighthouse in 'as restored' condition. Tickets will be on sale this weekend at the first event of the St. Peters Bay Blueberry Festival - the Community Yard Sale being held in the St. Peters Rink on Saturday, July 27th from 8:30 - 12:00 and also on Sunday, July 28th at the Morell Farmers Market from 9:00 - 1:00. We hope to see you there!
This tall ship is starting a two-month training run with 25 students and 15 staff. It arrived from the Maggies and is on its way to Miramichi where they will start a race! Enjoyed an overnight here in the Harbour as they were ahead of schedule. Bye, Bye!
Having finished the raise of the building this week brings the finishing strokes before painting.
Installation of one of four flags to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday and the first year of SPHLS ownership. Go Brodie Go!
The flags are up and the new railing in. Time for SPHLS Directors Mel Anderson and Doug Milligan to share in a light moment. After Canada Day we paint!!!!
The Lighthouse now standing in rarified air!!! Hard to imagine how 4 feet can make her so proud and noble!!
A happy crew and job well done at 4:00 pm Thursday, June 22, 2017.
THIS JUST IN!
SPHLS volunteers will be selling raffle tickets at the Morell COOP on Sunday, June 25th from 1-5 pm. We hope to see you there!
We are almost finished the last stage of cleaning the building with a high water pressure blast.
Three passes are made at the wall including one with an anti-mildew mixture. With the final pass, the original brown of the shingle returns.
You can see a 2100 gallon water truck at the parking area with its hose carefully placed along the path to the building.
Next week, stay tuned for raising the lighthouse!
